Trip to Kinnaur, Himachal

Let's go Himachal

We'll use this site to share the experience with everyone. We'll include our itinerary, the interesting places we visited, and the interesting things we saw. Don't worry, there will be lots of pictures!

We had been to the western part of Himachal earlier. This time we were looking to explore the beautiful district of Kinnaur. Kinnaur is normally open to tourists from mid April till end of September. This is the time when the snow stays out of the way of the roads leading to Kinnaur.

A very popular and difficult tour circuit in Himachal includes starting from Shimla, then through Kinnaur to Lahaul and Spiti valley, finally crossing the Kunzum pass and Rohtang pass onto Manali. Both these passes open up only in the middle of June and remain open till end of September.

I had no inclination in trying this full circuit but I thought I would consider myself lucky if I could at least go till Kinnaur. I knew a number of friends who had come back disappointed having failed to proceed due to landslide and other road problems. It is not necessary that one can travel to these areas even in the time period mentioned above. But of course, the chances are high.

Thanks to the recent HR trainings in office I have begun to look at things differently. A direct effect of this was this crazy idea of traveling in the month of March. I was given full support in this lunaticism by my wife Sonali and daughter Debali. Sonali, in fact, went a step further stating that if we could make it during this time the scenery would be even more scintillating because there would be abundance of snow.

True.......high risk brings high return !
